This project is located in an old rooftop space, originally the studio of the homeowner’s father, which is now intended to be transformed into a room for the couple. The site features a common Taiwanese iron sheet pitched roof, a structure that appears quite interesting amidst current prevalent spatial typologies.
We decided to retain part of the sloped roof shape and present it in a completely new form, aiming to preserve the memories of the past studio while granting it a new function, thereby maintaining the essence of home.
Our design philosophy is inspired by the Bauhaus movement, which advocates six principles: functionality, simplicity, innovative materials, spatial flow, harmony, and concise, powerful colors. Given that the existing space is not large, we adopted an open-minded approach to our design intervention.
Firstly, we employed dramatic colors to define the spaces, using a red box at the entrance and a blue study area to create a striking contrast, thus reinforcing the functional zoning of the space. Secondly, we chose to incorporate a half wall in the work area to avoid adding more barriers, maintaining a sense of openness. This design effectively delineates functional areas while promoting visual flow and expansiveness.
Additionally, we eliminated extravagant and luxurious hardware designs in favor of handle-less cabinetry, which not only aligns with the Bauhaus principle of simplicity but also contributes to a cleaner and more streamlined visual aesthetic throughout the space. We aspire to infuse this old house with a new look through Bauhaus design theory, thus continuing the family’s legacy in the process.
